Under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 94G, adults 21 years and older may legally cultivate cannabis at home for personal use. The Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) permits each adult to grow up to six (6) marijuana plants per person. However, Massachusetts state law enforces a household maximum of 12 plants, regardless of how many adults reside at the address. This 12-plant cap applies to all residential properties throughout the Commonwealth.
For outdoor cannabis cultivation, Massachusetts requires that all plants remain not visible from any public place without the use of binoculars, aircraft, or other optical aids. Plants must be grown in a secure, locked enclosure on the cultivator's property. Municipal ordinances may impose additional restrictions, so growers in Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Cambridge, and other Massachusetts cities should verify local regulations before starting an outdoor grow.
