Strain Overview

Bubba Kush is the indica anchor of half of modern cannabis genetics, and the people chasing 30% THC numbers in dessert hybrids are sleeping on it. The cut we sell is the Matt Berger version, the OG-Kush-leaning indica that has been the reference Bubba Kush since the late 1990s. THC tests 17-22%, which is low by modern standards, and the buzz hits harder than most strains testing 8-10 points higher. If you have run Peanut Butter Breath, DoSiDos, or any of the OGKB-lineage modern hybrids, you have run a piece of Bubba Kush whether you knew it or not.

Lineage & History

Bubba Kush is a clone-only strain that traces back to the late 1990s in California. The accepted origin story credits a grower named Bubba (sometimes referred to as Bubba Kushman) who pulled the cut from a chance pollination of OG Kush by an unknown indica, possibly Northern Lights or a Bubble Gum-leaning plant. The exact second parent has never been confirmed and the cut has only ever existed as a clone. The Matt Berger version is one of the cleanest expressions of the original phenotype and is what we sell.

What makes Bubba Kush historically important is what came out of it. Bubba Kush is upstream of OGKB (OG Kush Breath), which is the parent of DoSiDos, which is one of the parents of Peanut Butter Breath, which we already sell. The Wedding Cake side of modern dessert lineage runs through Triangle Kush, which is OG Kush leaning, which means a real chunk of the modern catalog has Bubba in its bloodline at one or two generations removed. None of those modern strains taste like Bubba Kush. They taste like dessert. But the indica weight that defines the modern indica-dom hybrid lane traces back here.

Flavor & Aroma

Crack the jar and you get coffee first. Roasted, slightly bitter, with an earthy gas underneath that gives the smell a heavy old-school quality you don’t get from modern dessert hybrids. There is no candy, no fruit, no sugar. Just coffee, kush gas, and a slight chocolate-hash undertone that some people pick up on the back of the smell.

The flavor tracks the smell almost exactly. Coffee on the inhale (more bitter than sweet), then kush gas rolls in on the exhale with a soft hash-cocoa close. The smoke is heavy, the way old-school indica smoke is supposed to be heavy. It is not the easiest smoke to handle. Joints especially run hot if you don’t pace them. If you smoke it in a clean glass piece you will get the most chocolate-hash. Joints lean it heavier toward the gas side. The cure matters. Two weeks fresh, Bubba Kush tastes raw. Six weeks cured and the chocolate really comes forward.

Effects: A 19% Indica that Hits Like 28%

This is the part of Bubba Kush that the modern bag-appeal market has lost track of. The Matt Berger cut tests 17-22% THC depending on the run. That is low. Plenty of dessert hybrids test 28-32% and put you to sleep less reliably than this one does. The reason is the terp profile. Heavy myrcene, classic kush caryophyllene, and a deep limonene base that pulls the buzz directly into the body without the cerebral lift modern hybrids start with.

The buzz comes on within 10 minutes and the body side hits first. Mood lifts but only as a side effect of the relaxation. By 20 minutes you are noticeably heavy. By 30 minutes you are leaned back and the buzz is settled in for the long haul. This is one of the few strains where I would call the buzz genuinely sedating without overstating it. The duration runs 90 minutes to 2 hours at peak.

This is a sleep strain. Or a couch strain. Or an end-of-the-night strain. It is not a daytime smoke and it is not trying to be. The reason to run Bubba Kush in 2026 is exactly because most modern strains have lost the indica weight that Bubba Kush was bred to deliver. If you have been chasing high-THC numbers and not getting the buzz you actually want, this is the recalibration strain.

Growing Bubba Kush

Bubba Kush is one of the easier indica strains to grow, which is part of why it has stayed in catalogs for 25 years. She is short, bushy, and forgiving on conditions, with a compact indica structure that makes her ideal for tents and Sea of Green setups. The plants stay naturally short, often topping out at 3-4 feet indoor, which means you can run more plants per light without canopy issues.

She is a moderate feeder. Doesn’t need babying with nutrients, doesn’t need exotic supplementation, and tolerates a wider range of pH than most modern cuts. Defoliate at flip and once or twice through flower. The buds get dense classic-kush dense, with that sticky old-school resin that builds heavy in the last two weeks. Watch humidity from week 4 onward. The dense bud structure traps moisture.

Flower runs 8-9 weeks. Pull her at 70-80% cloudy with 20-30% amber for the full sedating buzz. This is one of the few strains where you actually want to push toward more amber, since the indica side is the point. The cure matters more than most. Two weeks and Bubba Kush tastes harsh. Six to eight weeks cured and the chocolate-hash comes through.

If You Like Bubba Kush, Try

  • Peanut Butter Breath ($99): lineage descendant via DoSiDos via OGKB. Different terps (nutty-earthy) but the same indica weight that runs through the OG-Kush family tree.
  • GMO ($99): different lane (garlic-funk) but similar long-tail indica buzz that holds its peak for 90+ minutes.
  • Wedding Cake ($99): distant lineage cousin via Triangle Kush. Modern dessert expression of indica heritage Bubba Kush helped establish.
  • Government Oasis ($99): GMO x Gush Mints by Purple City. Heavy modern indica-dom hybrid that captures Bubba’s body weight in a different terp lane.
  • Sherb Cake ($69): Wedding Cake offspring. Lighter, sweeter, and more dessert-forward if you want the modern indica style instead of the old-school weight.

FAQ

Is Bubba Kush indica or sativa? Indica. Heavy, body-forward, and one of the most clearly sedating buzzes in modern catalogs. There is no real cerebral lift to speak of. Mood goes up only as a side effect of the body relaxation.

How strong is Bubba Kush? THC tests 17-22%. That is low by modern standards. The buzz hits harder than the number suggests because of the terp profile, especially the heavy myrcene. This is one of the strains that proves the THC number does not predict the buzz.

Who bred Bubba Kush? Bubba Kush is clone-only. The original cut traces back to a grower named Bubba in California in the late 1990s. The exact second parent crossed with OG Kush has never been confirmed. The Matt Berger version is one of the cleanest expressions of the original cut and is what we sell.

What does Bubba Kush taste like? Coffee on the inhale (more bitter than sweet), then kush gas on the exhale with a soft hash-cocoa close. No candy, no fruit. Old-school indica flavor from before dessert hybrids took over.

How long does Bubba Kush take to flower? 8-9 weeks indoor. Push to 9 weeks for the full sedating buzz. Pull her at 20-30% amber, more amber than you would pull most strains, since the indica side is the point.

How much do Bubba Kush clones cost? $69 per clone with free 2-day shipping included to all 50 states.
